Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care Courses (CHP)

CHP 490 - Pastoral Crisis Intervention (2 hrs.)
This course will prepare those in ministry to develop and strengthen their skills and abilities to respond to crisis. Learners will understand how pastoral interventions and traditional psychological crisis interventions can be effectively integrated. Students will learn how the perspective of the scriptures, faith and theology provide a powerful addition to the standardized critical incident response.
CHP 540 - Pastoral Care for Dying, Grief, & Loss (3 hrs.)
CHP 630 - Foundations of Chaplaincy (3 hrs.)
In this course, the first of two Foundations of Chaplaincy courses, students will examine the expanding roles of the professional chaplain in contemporary society. We will examine the theologies and theories that are basic for equipping the student for a professional pastoral care ministry in a denominational context or in a secular multi-faith context. We will also examine the spiritual experiences of persons in crisis, those religious activities which can facilitate their growth and healing, and forms of theological reflection and ethical discourse which can help give order and sense to the chaos that persons experience in the crises of their lives. Because many professional chaplains find themselves in contexts for ministry characterized by secular pluralism, we will examine theological principles for maintaining fidelity to the evangelical imperative within such a ministry context.
CHP 631 - Foundations of Chaplaincy II (3 hrs.)
In this course, the second of two Foundations of Chaplaincy courses, students will examine the professionalization of chaplaincy in contemporary society. We will continue with many of the themes raised in CHP 630, but will focus on the practice of contemporary Professional Chaplaincy. We will examine some of the practical ways in which the theologies and theories that we looked at in CHP 630 are applied in a professional pastoral care ministry, whether in a denominational context or in a secular multi-faith context. We will examine ways of supportive listening and non-threatening reflective "wondering" which facilitate persons in their examination of their spiritual experiences. We will examine religious activities that can facilitate persons in their spiritual and physical growth and healing. We will develop further our ability to think theologically, and to facilitate the person's theological reflection and ethical discourse which can help give order and sense to the chaos that they experience in the crises of their lives.
CHP 632 - Chaplaincy in Correctional Settings (2 hrs.)
CHP 634 - Chaplaincy in Hospitals (2 hrs.)
CHP 636 - Chaplaincy in Senior Care(2 hrs.)
CHP 650 - Critical Incidence Response (2 hrs.)
This course will prepare those currently in a helping profession and those moving into a peer support role to assess and develop their abilities to respond to crisis. The participants will understand crisis intervention theory and critical incident stress management strategies. As peer helpers, candidates will develop key knowledge and skill areas which will enable them to work within an integrated, multi-component, multi-intervention system to achieve the goal of crisis stabilization and symptom mitigation. The course will increase participants' ability to value people and their life experiences and thereby increase the effectiveness of their caregiving. The course is facilitative, participatory, and experiential. Candidates will complete this course having exposure to crisis intervention and having the confidence and competence to assist those in crisis as well as assist in Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD), Crisis Management Briefings (CMB), Defusing, and Demobilization.
